Maya Angelou is renowned for her wonderful gifts as an orator and a storyteller. As a fellow storyteller, I was inspired to write this three movement string orchestra piece inspired by "Still I Rise" one of her most famous poems. The piece incorporates fast rhythms, heimiolas, and much much more to challenge the conductor and your players. The piece begins dark and twisted, like the first stanza of the poem but slowly gradually grows into a rising motion, to remind everybody you can also overcome adversity.
