Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) wrote this piece in 1934. The premiere later that same year featured Rachmaninoff playing the piano part himself. Later, Rachmaninoff and conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) collaborated on the first recording of the piece with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This variation is the best known movement of the 24 total. On its own, this variation has appeared in media, such as the movies Somewhere in Time (1980) and Groundhog Day (1993). This arrangement makes the piece more approachable for less experienced players. It includes optional note names, a thinner texture, an easier key, and chord symbols to assist in learning it.
