Starting with a small and simple idea, this virtuosic work evolves into an intense toccata using a fiery malleted line with flying arpeggiated chimes. This is followed by an abrupt shift of character using chimes layered over singing bells and a much more intimate, flowing section. The calm is interrupted by the return of the bass ostinato which pervades the entire range of handbells to the end.
