Return Again for bassoon duo is a programmatic work in four movements that traces an individual's journey towards spiritual coherence.
In movement one,Meditation (Attempted), the traveler seeks enlightenment, but fails. What begins with a compositional procedure inspired by those used to render ragas in Indian classical music degenerates into dense textures and intensely chromatic angst.
The traveler laments his or her missed opportunity in ASong with long, flowing lines in minor modes. However, towards the end, he or she finds a welcome distraction - perhaps comfort and guidance - in the empathetic counterpoint of another traveler.
Compassion turns into something more in A Dance. Minor modalities and contrapuntal textures remain from A Song, but these parameters sound through the filter of a tango. This publication provides two versions of A Dance, allowing the performers to choose the version that they prefer.
The Universe (?) brings back the raga-inspired procedures of the first movement. This time, however, the traveler finds the wholeness he or she seeks, and the music spins out into quiet harmonic resonance.
