Inspired by the Requiem settings of Mozart and Cherubini, Rheinberger created his first major sacred work in 1865 with the "Requiem" op. 60. He reworked it before the first performance in 1870 and dedicated it to the dead of the Franco-Prussian War. The premiere was a great success, even the poet Paul Heyse reported how the work "grabbed hold of me, lifted me up, and washed me away on a current of strength and beauty, swelling higher and higher." The fundamental nature of the "Requiem" is marked by hope and confidence. It impresses with its varied, melodious choral writing, warm instrumentation and artistic polyphony.
