The cantata Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende BWV 28 (Rejoice! The passing year is ended) for the Sunday after Christmas begins in an unexpected manner. Instead of the usual opening chorus, we have an aria, characterized by joyful, dance-like rhythms in three-four time and the concertante orchestral part for two groups of instruments. In stark contrast to this decidedly "modern" music, the choir follows with its song of thanksgiving Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, motet-like in the stile antico. An arrangement of this particular movement became widely known within the motet Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt BWV Anh. 160, where it is sung to the text Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehre. The text by Erdmann Neumeister gives thanks for the past year and asks for blessings for the coming year.
