Arrangement for string quartet of the song “Red Rose Café” (original Dutch title: “In 't kleine café aan de haven”). Written in 1975 by Dutch singer Pierre Kartner, it became a modest hit in the Netherlands. It was then translated into English, allowing Irish groups Celtic Thunder and the Fureys to have a hit with the song. Translations in French and German followed suit. This sentimental song in gently rollicking 6/8 time asks for a lot of ‘schmaltz’: the melody should be played with a lot of vibrato, and occasional rubato while the accompanying parts keep the tempo straight. A fine addition to your repertoire for weddings and receptions (especially the second half). Enjoy!
