Written for the 2025 National Police Memorial Service at Coventry Cathedral, Reconciliation is a deeply moving and symbolic work that reflects on remembrance, unity, and the enduring power of peace. At its heart lies the profound relationship forged between Coventry and Dresden in the aftermath of the Second World War—two cities once devastated by conflict, now forever linked through reconciliation and hope.
Drawing on internationally recognised musical signals of remembrance, the work weaves together the solemn calls of The Last Post (UK), Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden (Germany), Taps (USA), and Sonnerie aux morts (France). These themes emerge and intertwine throughout the piece, representing a shared act of mourning that transcends borders and speaks to a universal human experience.
Alongside these, Scaife-McGee incorporates hymn melodies associated with remembrance, grounding the work in a spiritual and reflective tradition. A recurring, tolling bell—tuned to match the pitch of the Peace Bell housed in Coventry Cathedral, itself a gift from Dresden—serves as a poignant sonic thread throughout, symbolising both loss and the enduring call for peace.
Reconciliation moves seamlessly between moments of quiet introspection and powerful, full-band climaxes, mirroring the journey from grief to unity.
