The text of “Read On” comes from a blog written by Brooke Manolis in 2019 for the students enrolled in her British Literature class. In this entry, she shares her thoughts on why she believes reading and telling stories matter. Moved when I came across her words, which use books as a metaphor for people and the importance of the stories within all of us, I asked for permission to use portions of the text as lyrics for this song. The result is a musical adventure designed to take both listener and performer on a journey of self-discovery and expression. Over steady, entrancing patterns in the piano accompaniment, the vocals spin and echo the narrative through speech-like rhythms and text-painted melodic contours. Compound meters provide opportunities for musicians to explore word stress and gain a deeper understanding of macro and micro rhythmic structures. This piece also features interchangeable harmonies for the purpose of making the song adaptable to each ensembles’ needs, as well as providing an avenue for groups to explore different performance interpretations.
