“Ranzinza” by Ernesto Nazareth
"Ranzinza", which translates roughly to “grumpy” or “cranky,” was composed by Ernesto Nazareth, one of the most influential figures in early Brazilian music. Known for blending European classical music, Brazilian choro, tango, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Nazareth helped define a uniquely Brazilian style that laid the groundwork for what would eventually influence samba and bossa nova.
Character and Style
Despite the title — which might imply something irritable or harsh — Ranzinza is ironically playful and elegant. The piece captures the witty personality Nazareth infused in many of his tangos brasileiros: a balance between sophistication and rhythmic charm.
