Composed by Johann Strauss Sr. Arranged by Patrick Dunnigan. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, Classical, Historic, March, Romantic Period. 74 pages. Patrick Dunnigan #1224388. Published by Patrick Dunnigan (A0.1658100).
Musicians and music-lovers the world over immediately recognize this famous march!
Radetzky March (Opus 228) was composed in 1848 and is dedicated to Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, a Bohemian nobleman and Austrian field marshal. Strauss created this music to commemorate Radetzky's victory at the Battle of Custoza. It was first performed in Vienna in August 1848. The march has become a staple of orchestral concerts the world over. Since 1946, it has been a fixture as an encore of the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Eve concerts. This is fun and effective music that your students and audience will love. It makes a great concert opener or closer.
This adaptation is in E-flat Major which is one half-step higher than the original. This change of key adds extra crispness to the wind ensemble sonority as well as increased playability. It is playable with as few as 24 players (20 winds and 4 percussion) but doubling the clarinets is recommended. The soprano saxophone, bass trombone, and string bass parts are optional. If percussion players are limited, omit the glockenspiel part.
This arrangement is rated Grade 4 and is suitable for intermediate to advanced concert bands and wind ensembles. Musicians of all ages and abilities will enjoy playing this timeless music.
