Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano concerto paraphrase of 1st theme, mov't 1 (in form of an etude) by Sergei Rachmaninoff Piano Method - Digital Sheet Music

By Sergei Rachmaninoff

This theme according to the Journal of American Musicology was an unconscious quotation of a liturgical chant from the Russian Orthodox church (although rachmaninoff never acknowledged that it was not his original melody). The concerto opens with this beautiful theme, presented here in the form of an etude. The etude quality is in the left hand (scales and arpeggii) with suggested pedalling that more or less follows the harmonic rhythm (there is certainly no single way to pedal of course). The passagework in the left hand and the quick harmonic rhythm will contribute to one's overall understanding of basic pedalling, made all the more satisfying due to the beauty of the melody.
