Hrachia Melikyan passed away a few weeks before the premiere of this quintet for woodwinds was performed in Yerevan, Armenia in 2006 by the Quintette à vent de Bretagne (France). We thank flutist Alain Ehkirch for having carefully checked this work before publication and for his comment: It is an expressive work deploying a strong dramatic character leading into serenity.
Melikyan’s writing exploits the extreme technical, musical, and emotional resources of the performers who share his level of profound musical sensitivity while the roots of his music remain firmly implanted in the traditions of the Armenian cultural and musical experience.
