Quartet No. 1 in A minor: IV. Resistance String Quartet - Digital Sheet Music

Drawing from the sounds of anthemic rock, "Resistance" opens with a bold war cry against tyranny. The cello and viola keep the tempo of the march with an audacious bassline, while 16th-note arpeggiations are passed between the violins. The countersubject of the theme later serves as a motif for chord-building, while the 16th notes are covered by the 1st violin's harmonics to emulate the sound of hi hats. In the "Pick it up" section, a bouncier version of the bassline along with swelling chords in the violins create a new-wave backdrop for the second theme, introduced by the viola. The new theme continues in the 1st violin, while the viola takes on an alt-rock guitar counter-melody. Bottom-up chord-building, alternating with hi hats and bass, cycle through progressive minor-third (and major-third) chord changes (a la Danny Elfman), until the tempo slows down and the mood becomes serious again with a return to the opening theme. After another iteration of fast/slow sections, we find ourselves in a fog of glassy sans-vibrato chords that modulate in an eerie fashion and descend downward in fourths, while a motif from the opening theme occasionally pierces through. The cello then gets a chance to perform the opening theme accompanied by the rest of the quartet playing a soft, innocent version of the audacious bassline. The final "Pick it up again" section ensues, ending in a dramatic slow-down into the final iteration of the "Resistance" theme, and the piece closes with the audacious bassline played by the entire quartet in octave unison. This recording features Mike Hsu (violin 1), Chris Fotinakis (violin 2), Margaret Wang (viola), and Harry Gilbert (cello).
