Quartet No. 1 in A minor: III. Potomac String Quartet - Digital Sheet Music

String Quartet Cello, Viola, Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1703217

By Daniel Shen (vln 2); Hai Nguyen (vla); Mike Hsu (vln 1); Shamin Gopinath (cello). Composed by Mike Hsu. This edition: pdf, streaming. Chamber, Classical, Rock. 34 pages. Mike Hsu #1267066. Published by Mike Hsu (A0.1703217).

I came up with the opening theme while visiting my uncle in Potomac in 1999, hence the title. In 2012, my wife and I visited Jackson Hole with our dog Haley, and while staying in a rustic cabin in a region known for its wildlife, a Native American-inspired theme came to mind, which ultimately became the theme for the Meno Mosso section. I eventually combined these two sections into a cohesive movement, incorporating a sustained driving bassline and rhythmic double-stop motifs recycled from the 1st movement my String Quintet in G. After feedback from fellow composers at a Cascadia Composers presentation, I added unpredictable (though intentional) meter changes to enhance the sense of urgency. The movement ends like an outro to a new-wave song (a la Alphaville's "Sounds Like a Melody").

The recording features Mike Hsu (violin 1), Daniel Shen (violin 2), Hai Nguyen (viola), and Shamin Gopinath (cello).
