Johann Christian Bach was born in Leipzig on September 5th, 1736. He was the eleventh son of Johann Sebastian Bach, from whom he received his early musical training (upon his father's death, he became the pupil of his half-brother, Carl Philipp Emmanual Bach, in Berlin). In 1754, Johann Christian went to Italy, where he studied counterpoint with Giovanni Battista Martini, and in 1762 he moved to London, there to spend the rest of his days (hence his fame as 'The London Bach'). He is also famous for his great friendship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whom he met in London when the latter was eight years old; Leopold Mozart described the two as 'inseparable'. The bond was to continue for the rest of Bach's life. Johann Christian Bach died in London on New Year's Day, 1782.
