Composed by Richard O. Burdick. This edition: pdf, streaming. 21st Century, Classical, Contemporary, Early Music, Renaissance. 30 pages. I Ching Music #1337895. Published by I Ching Music (A0.1777882).

Qualcosa (Something) is the result of an abandoned attempt at a complete, long-form I Ching cycle. After composing six sections, it became clear that a full cycle would extend beyond the desired scope of the work. As it stands, the piece unfolds over nearly eight minutes and represents a markedly reflective and uncharacteristic style within the composer’s output.

The work draws inspiration from the early polyphonic language of Johannes Ockeghem, whose music the composer is currently recording. In contrast to Burdick’s usual approach—where melodic lines tend to rise and avoid repeated tones—the melodic motion here is more static and contemplative, with greater use of repetition and sustained sonorities.

The composition is organized into six sections, each with a distinct tempo. These are arranged as three opposing pairs, reflecting relationships on the I Ching circle:

01–01 Qián (The Creative) 33–02 Kūn (The Receptive)

36–03 Zhūn (Difficulty at the Beginning) 04–50 Dǐng (The Cauldron)

16–04 Méng (Youthful Folly) 48–49 Gé (Revolution)

Single movement | Duration: approx. 8 minutes.
