“Pure Imagination” is the signature song from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, sung by Gene Wilder in character as Willy Wonka. When the film was first released, neither it nor “Pure Imagination” were major hits; other songs from the soundtrack initially overshadowed it.
As the movie gained a cult following through TV reruns and home video in the 1980s, the song became much more famous and beloved.

It has since been covered and rearranged many times in pop, jazz, and film/TV, including a charting version by the cast of Glee (entering the Billboard Hot 100 in 2011).

After Gene Wilder’s death in 2016, streams and sales of “Pure Imagination” reportedly jumped by over 1000%, and the song was used in many tributes.
