This is an anthem I wrote for the season of Lent. It is based on a plainchant that I composed for a hymn bearing the same text. Originally, as mentioned, the hymn was written as a melody with continuo accompaniment, which I later decided to develop further. The result was, at first, the fugue found in the second movement; later, in the third movement—which, though it contains fewer similarities to the main theme (the plainchant), still serves as an elaboration of the same idea. The work is written for choir—preferably soloists, though it may also be performed by a larger chorus—and is accompanied by the organ. The text is drawn from The Scottish Psalter (1650), which I found on the website The Westminster Standard; it also includes notes by the Rev. John Brown of Haddington, a minister of the Burgher branch of the Secession Church.
