Psalm 121 started as a piece for a cappella choir. It was commissioned by conductor Pierre Masse for his ensemble, the Ecclesia Consort, to sing in two performances in 2002. Since this psalm was one of my favoites, it was a great joy to compose this piece. It's 4 & 1/2 minute duration was dictated by the psalm text itself since I set every word to music.
Fast forward 20 years, I realized that this composition would work beautifully for saxophone quartet. As a result, this arrangement follows the a cappella setting quite literally.
