Juan Carlos Arciniega
Preludio, Nocturno y Scherzo, Op. 1

English
The Prelude, Nocturne and Scherzo, Op. 1 by Juan Carlos Arciniega was conceived as a tribute to the memory of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich. The work adopts a sonority that evokes certain characteristic features of his style, particularly in its intervallic and timbral treatment, while maintaining a distinctly personal voice.

The piece is structured in three movements. The first, Prelude, begins with a mysterious character and gradually develops into a texture driven by persistent and almost obsessive chromaticism. The second movement, Nocturne, offers a more introspective and meditative atmosphere, exploring the sonic possibilities of both instruments through strongly contrasting registers. Finally, the Scherzo, the longest movement, is marked by a highly dissonant harmonic language, featuring diminished octaves, minor seconds, and tritones, with a rhythmic foundation that shapes the overall drive and character of the movement.
