Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Christopher D. T. Lawhorne. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, Classical. 56 pages. Christopher D. T. Lawhorne #1451025. Published by Christopher D. T. Lawhorne (A0.1892459).
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Minor, Op. 23 No. 5, composed in 1901 as part of his Op. 23 set of ten preludes, remains one of the composer’s most recognizable and electrifying works. Known for its commanding rhythmic drive, sweeping lyricism, and virtuosic intensity, the Prelude reflects many of the musical qualities that would come to define Rachmaninoff’s compositional voice: rich harmonic language, expansive melodies, and dramatic emotional contrast. Though originally written for solo piano, the work’s orchestral character has long inspired listeners and arrangers alike, making it a compelling candidate for adaptation to larger ensembles.
This arrangement by Christopher D. T. Lawhorne began during his undergraduate studies at Reinhardt University and was later revisited and substantially refined. In returning to the work, Lawhorne sought not only to preserve the brilliance and integrity of Rachmaninoff’s original score, but also to reimagine its sonic possibilities through the color palette of the modern string orchestra. The arrangement remains highly faithful to the original piano composition, though select passages required subtle adjustments due to the technical and idiomatic limitations, and opportunities, of bowed string instruments.
Scored for divided string orchestra, including multiple violin, viola, and cello subdivisions, the arrangement explores a broad range of textures and timbral combinations. String-specific techniques and carefully considered articulations are employed throughout to emphasize both the aggressive rhythmic momentum of the outer sections and the soaring lyricism of the contrasting middle theme. The famous march-like opening emerges with striking weight and precision, while the central section allows the ensemble to showcase warmth, depth, and expressive phrasing often associated with the Romantic orchestral tradition.
While originally conceived with advanced high school musicians in mind, the revised edition increasingly reflects the demands and sophistication of collegiate and professional string ensembles. The work challenges performers not only technically, but also musically, requiring nuanced control of balance, color, articulation, and ensemble cohesion.
Through this arrangement, Lawhorne offers audiences an opportunity to experience Rachmaninoff’s celebrated Prelude from a new perspective; one that highlights the dramatic power and expressive versatility of the string orchestra while honoring the spirit of the original masterpiece.
