Hi, this is a true-to-the-original transcription of Chopin's 'Raindrop' prelude. I don't think it is very technically demanding so anyone having an intermediate level of four mallet playing with a crash course on vibraphone mallet dampening will likely be technically equipped to give a great performance. However, you'll need to bring a virtuosic level of musicianship to table.
Renown 20th century pianist and conductor, Alfred Cortot, has described the challenge of performing this work as: “The entire section of the prelude that modulates enharmonically into C-sharp minor [B-flat minor in this transcription] must evoke the impression of nightmare; of horrified hallucination. Furthermore, upon the return of the initial subject, the theme must not reappear with the exact same gently melancholic character as at the beginning; rather, having been touched by the tragic resonance of the fateful sonorities in the central section, it must now bear an accent of painful exhaustion—almost of anguish. This justifies that great sigh—a futile attempt to erase the memory of a despairing vision—which brings this admirable piece to a close amidst an impression of ineffable resignation.” So, good luck getting all that into your performance!
About the Transcription Process With this transcription I split the difference between the original publication and Francisco Tarrega’s transcription for guitar. I thought the original publication lacked a few things (and apparently so did Claude Debussy), so I added some dynamics and tempo indications from Debussy’s edition. I suggested some pedaling and mallet dampening and to avoid clutter, I only suggested them once, but the markings apply to subsequent similar passages. Feel free to add to or ignore them. This is how I'd perform it in my living room, but it'll ultimately depend on the sustain of your particular instrument, the acoustic environment, and your musical taste.
About Colin Bunnell I’m a mostly former percussionist turned orchestra librarian. I’ve been working behind the scenes for orchestras big and small since 2012. In a nutshell, orchestra librarians overhaul printed sheet music so it can be deftly played by busy professional musicians in concert programs that have very little rehearsal time, which means all the music on the page needs to be very clear. I started arranging classical music for mallet percussion instruments during the pandemic to improve my music notation chops and overall librarying skills, so I hope you’ll find these pieces neatly presented and useful to your performing career.
