This beautiful Prelude and the lively Caprice are excerpted from the Pieces de viole, Livre III by Marin Marais, written in 1711. The music is transposed to the bass and tenor clefs for ease of reading by cellists and bassists. Some notes have been redistributed to suit the string arrangement of the cello, but otherwise the transcription is faithful to the original.
Also included in this edition is a reprint of the manuscript gamba part for your reference and enjoyment! These pieces are great teaching tools since the ornamentation is relatively simple, and the moves to tenor clef are pleasing and straightforward.
