Canzone-preghiera, estratta dal dramma lirico "Ave Maria", composta nel 1934 da Salvatore Allegra su libretto di Guglielmo Zorzi rielaborato da Alberto Donini.
"Ave Maria" fu uno dei maggiori successi musicali di Salvatore Allegra, tanto che ancora negli anni '80 nella "sua" Firenze (Allegra era Palermitano di origine ma la sua carriera musicale lo aveva visto attivo soprattutto tra Firenze - dove morì - e Roma) la si portava in scena. Era il contraltare colto, verista alla musica da operetta del "Gatto in Cantina", grazie al quale il compositore aveva fatto rifiorire il teatro in vernacolo fiorentino pochi anni prima.
L'opera ebbe un discreto successo non solo alla Pergola di Firenze, ma anche alla Scala di Milano, al Petruzzelli di Bari, al Regio di Torino e all'Opera di Roma, ma anche a Dublino, Kassel, Berlino, Amsterdam...
A song, a prayer, from the opera "Ave Maria", composed in 1935 by Salvatore Allegra, a Sicilian composer who was mostly active in Florence - where he died - and Rome - where he worked many years at Cinecittà and inside the RAI TV Company.
This was one of his greatest successes, not only in Florence but all over the main Italian theatres (Rome, Milan, Bari, Catania, Turin) as well as in some of the most important theatres in Europe (Dublin, Kassel, Berlin, Amsterdam).
