But it is a lovely sound. “Prairie Spring” and was inspired by Willa Cather’s evocative poem of the same name, and speaks to the stark beauty that stretches out across the midwest horizon. “Evening and the flat land, Rich and sombre and always silent; The miles of fresh-plowed soil, Heavy and black, full of strength and harshness; The growing wheat, the growing weeds, The toiling horses, the tired men; The long empty roads, Sullen fires of sunset, fading, The eternal, unresponsive sky…,.” (1873-1947). (The perfect piece if you're an ex-quintet whose flute player has gone missing!)
