Prague marks the forty-ninth destination in the journey of Ragtime at the Red Light District, a series that celebrates the power of spontaneity, wit, and moral courage. This piece unfolds on Perlovka, where comedy meets conviction, and melody becomes a stage for truth.

The traveler, a 31-year-old entertainer and comedian, is no ordinary performer. His sketches have led to the arrests of 625 criminals worldwide—from petty thieves to financiers of terrorism. In Prague, his impromptu brilliance continues.

Outside the Žižkov Television Tower, he catches four shoplifters in the act. At the Spanish Synagogue, while riffing on Kafka, he foils a vandalism plot. Inside a conference room at the Dancing House, his satire lands 16 corporate executives in jail for embezzlement.

But his most daring act unfolds at Great Strahov Stadium, during the Czech Super Cup between Mladá Boleslav and Sigma Olomouc. With help from stadium staff, he identifies 250 hooligans poised to riot. Security arrests them and escorts them to a prison-style train at Praha hlavní nádraží. He’s honored by both clubs and takes a victory lap before kickoff.

Later, he power walks to Perlovka, drawn by its nightlife. But he senses something missing—women working in the district crave more than spectacle. So he stages an impromptu comedy show. The laughter is hesitant—until he reveals a final twist: four of the world’s most dangerous men are inside a nearby club. With INTERPOL agents, confidential informants, and local police disguised as tourists, the arrests are swift.

The women prostrate in gratitude. One says:

“You may not be as pure as the Infant Child of Jesus at Church of Our Lady Victorious, but you are indeed a close second.”

He smiles. For the next three days, the women offer him their services—not out of obligation, but admiration.

Format: 4AABB4CD8AA — a structure that mirrors the arc of improvisation, revelation, and resolution.

A Section: Begins in F major, modulates to B-flat major with a fortississimo climax, then transitions through G7 back to F major, resolving in C major. This tonal journey reflects the performer’s layered persona—charming, commanding, and centered. The second go around returns with resolution, now colored by triumph and emotional depth

B Section: A rare 28-measure strain in B major, discovered by accident and embraced for its expressive breadth. Its extended phrasing mirrors the complexity of the performer’s stunts and moral undertones.

C Section: A single pass in B-flat major, offering lyrical contrast and harmonic warmth.

D Section: Modulates to A-flat major, with dramatic flair and emotional tension.

8-bar Bridge: Begins with a fortississimo burst, traversing multiple chords and inversions—symbolizing the chaos before clarity.

Bedřich Smetana’s “Vltava” from Má Vlast lends national pride and sweeping grandeur. May Aufderheide’s “A Totally Different Rag” and “Richmond Rag” add rhythmic wit and feminine strength. Dedicated to those lost during the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution, whose courage inspired the melody’s resolve.

This is not just a melody. It is a sketch in syncopation, a revolution rendered in rhythm. It reminds us that improvisation can be a force for justice, and that comedy, when wielded with conscience, can indeed change the world.

The traveler remains unnamed, but the impromptu soul is yours to applaud.
