My performance of my setting for alto and guitar of Prévert's poem
Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau

[My English version can be seen below]

Peindre d’abord une cage
avec une porte ouverte
peindre ensuite
quelque chose de joli
quelque chose de simple
quelque chose de beau
quelque chose d’utile
pour l’oiseau
placer ensuite la toile contre un arbre
dans un jardin
dans un bois
ou dans une forêt
se cacher derrière l’arbre
sans rien dire
sans bouger …
Parfois l’oiseau arrive vite

Paint first of all a cage its door should not be closed
Then you paint something pretty for the bird
simple as you please beautiful as well
something that the bird can use
Then take the canvas out in a garden against a tree
in a wood or in a forest deep
hide yourself behind the tree
and say no word motionless
Sometimes your bird will come quite quickly
But he could also take long years
before he decides to come along
Do not be discouraged just keep waiting keep waiting
if you need to for years and years
speed or slowness of arrival of your longed for bird
has no relation to your picture's final natural success.
When the bird comes over if he does come
please observe the deepest quiet you can
and wait until the bird goes inside the cage
and when he's gone inside with your
paintbrush you gently close the door.
Then, erasing one by one the cage's bars
you're careful not to touch a single feather, no feather of the bird
Then you paint a portrait of the tree
and choose the most pretty of its branches for the bird
also paint the leafy green and the fresh zephyr wind
and the dust of the great sun and noises of grassland creatures
in the heat of summmer sun
Then you must wait for the bird to decide it will sing
should the bird refuse to sing, that sign is bad
tells you that your picture will not do
but if he sings that's a good sign
sign that you may sign your picture
Now pull very gently
so gently pull
one of the feathers from the bird
and with i.
