The goal for this commission was for a work of art that focused on women living, not dying, with HIV/AIDS. The competition for this commission was created in order to shine a new kind of light on women throughout the world living with this illness, and also to emphasize that life with all its beauty and obligations, suffering and love, continues for these women, and does not end with the diagnosis. Williams and Keenan worked to find an essential strand and tone of hope in both the musical composition and in the poem. Both the music and the poem also carry a sense of burden, a sorrow, since women's lives are forever altered by this illness. Dorothy Williams is an established composer; this is Deborah Keenan's third commissioned work. This is the first work of art created by these artists working as a duo; they have discussed the idea of future projects.
