A lively traditional English folk tune, also known as Portsmouth Hornpipe, intended to be danced to. The earliest known publication of Portsmouth dates back to 1701, and has been arranged by several composers over the centuries, including Ralph Vaughan Williams, and later by Mike Oldfield, whose arrangement peaked at #3 in the UK Singles Chart.

Arranged here for an ensemble of up to 4 keyboardists. Only the main melody ('Recorder') and auto-accompaniment are required. All other parts are supplemental.

Parts vary in ability:

  • Auto-accompaniment - beginner/early intermediate. Can be performed by a leader or teacher while aiding other musicians. Can also be played by same musician as Recorder, making the piece a solo.
  • Recorder - Early intermediate. Main melody.
  • Tin Whistle - Early intermediate. Countermelody 1.
  • Accordion - Beginner. Countermelody 2.
