Published by Teresa Young (A0.1828119).The evocative traditional "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" seems to have first circulated orally in the U.S. in the early 1800s. Then in 1858 it made its way into the hymnbook "The Christian Songster." The singer journeys through trials, sorrows, and deep longing for home while looking toward a time when all will be well. The central image of Jordan ("I'm only going over Jordan") refers to crossing the biblical river Jordan. This metaphor in Christian preaching and African-American spirituals evokes crossing from hardship and ultimately death into rest, freedom, and new life.
Arranger Teresa Young's adaptation, a lead sheet in E minor, includes extended jazz chord voicings. Its lyrics are more spiritual than explicitly Christian, while preserving the powerful reference to "going over Jordan" toward better days and tender reunion with loved ones.
