One aspect when writing for brass quintet that has always interested me has been all the available color and timbre possibilities. My first brass quintet, Four Sketches (BIM ENS48 - 1990), explored a wide range of basically bright colors, while with Mosaics (BIM ENS 75 - 1997), my second quintet, flugelhorns replaced trumpets so that there were fewer color changes and the colors used were darker and more somber. With Polychromes I have combined elements of the first two quintets - the bright colors of the Four Sketches and the darker and more monochromatic colors of the Mosaics.
The six movements of this Polychromes suite are divided into two distinct parts (1-3 and 4-6) with a wide range of poetic musical entertainment.

Polychromes was commissioned by the Potsdam Brass Quintet and the Crane School of Music to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Potsdam Brass Quintet.
