Composed by Ottorino Respighi. Arranged by Adrian Dee. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, Classical, Romantic Period. 104 pages. Adrian Dee #1438208. Published by Adrian Dee (A0.1879297).I actually wrote this arrangement in 2016 but at that time it was officially still under copyright for a few more years so could not be published. I gathered a bunch of friends together and we performed it for my milestone birthday party in 2017, and then I put it away. By the time the copyright expired it had been buried and forgotten. I recently unearthed it and am pleased to finally share it with you.
Written in 1924, “Pines of Rome” is a major work for an orchestra to tackle, let alone a flute choir. If you have a large ensemble and are looking for a showpiece, you’re in the right place. It is in four movements which segue one to the next, and runs about 18 minutes. It would be a spectacular concert ending piece. The instrumentation for this arrangement is: piccolo, 6 C-flutes, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute. The C-flute parts 2 and 6 require low B.
"Pines" was innovative for its time by incorporating actual recorded birdsong in the third movement. If you can swing a recording of a nightingale, by all means go for it. Short of that, I have notated in the piccolo what I hope sounds like birdsong (ms. 354-359). If you have a creative piccolo player who you trust, turn them loose to improvise a bit in those measures. It should be light and playful.
The harmonies in “Pines” are quite thick, by that I mean often somewhat dissonant. It’s as though Respighi has two or more keys going on at the same time in places, especially in the first and fourth movements. Trust it, go with it, it all resolves in the end.
The audio clip posted here has snippits from each movement.
