Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, Opera, Romantic Period, Wedding. Score and individual part. 7 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #1321207. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1760919).

The Intermezzo from Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria rusticana has become well-known as a stand-alone piece and popular for instrumental recitals. The melody was adapted by Piero Mazzoni to fit the text of Ave Maria and it has become equally well-known as a vocal piece. The opera was written in 1888 and the work is now considered a classic “verismo” opera. This type of opera is not about gods, mythological figures or royalty, but instead focusses on ordinary people and their everyday problems, often with romance or violence added to enliven the plot. The opera was first performed on 17th May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.

This is a straightforward arrangement for oboe and piano and set in concert C major rather than the original F major. The arrangement uses the oboe's middle register most of the time. The lowest oboe note is E on the lowest line of the treble staff and the highest note is the C above the staff. There is also an optional top D and E, though the notes an octave below are also shown in the score. Being such a well-known melody, this is sure to be a popular addition to your oboe recital.
