Violin 1 plays the melody throughout. It stays in first position for the entire song.
Violin 2 plays open strings only!
Violin 3 is played by the most able player of the group. This is the player who fills gaps, who can count rests in a reliable way, and although the part stays in first position, it contains some jumps that are relatively hard. Violin 3 can be played on viola, too.
Cello plays the bass part. First position only and some half-position.
The first 8 and last 4 bars are relatively straightforward. The middle section contains some call-and-response, canon, and counterpoint. Initially, this can be tricky to count correctly and play together.
