Together with the six organ symphonies, the 24 Pièces de fantaisie are Louis Vierne’s most important contribution to the French Romantic organ repertoire. The collection is divided into four suites, each comprising six pieces. It was composed in 1926–1927 and bears the opus numbers 51, 53, 54 and 55. This collection shows Vierne at the height of his compositional powers. He has discovered his personal style, which sometimes proceeds through chromaticism to the frontiers of atonality, but which is also characterized by elegance, power and sentiment and is always formally accomplished.
