Looking for something to do next and I noticed that my last Piano Trio No. 4 was written in 2022. So, I said to myself, it is time to embark on a fifth installment.
I asked ChatGPT which composer has written five piano trios, not counting Mozart, Beethoven or Haydn, and I got Louis Spohr. So, I ordered a two-CD set on CPO of all five piano trios and I thought I would have a lot to choose from for inspiration.
In hindsight, the five piano trios by Spohr were not very inspiring. I then found out that Antonín Dvorák wrote five as well. The first one was a youthful work that has been lost and we are left with the four mature works that are widely available: No. 1 opus 21 in B-flat, No. 2 Opus 26 in G minor, No. 3 Opus 65 in F minor, and No. 4 Opus 90 in E minor, the Dumky.
Similarly, my first Piano Trio from 1994 is a "juvenile" work, not that great in retrospect ... LOL!!! I eventually got it right in 2012 with my "Piano Trio No. 2 ... Shosty-Bach Suite." And then I went ahead to my "Piano Trio No. 3 ... Keith Jarrett" (2014) and then "Piano Trio No. 4 ... Le Gondole Lugubri" (2022). So my current Piano Trio No. 5 is dedicated in memoriam to Antonín Dvorák, whose piano trios are so much more inspiring!!!
