On the tenth day of October 2002, a new generation in the whole of my mother's extended family was born. My sister Lindsey and her husband Dave had their first son, Nicholas Robert Paulus (named after both of his grandfathers). He was born right on schedule and already (after only a few months) one can see in him his mother's beauty and his father's penchant for subversive language. At about this same time I was to write a new piece for the Amelia Piano Trio: Anthea Kreston, violin, Jason Duckles, cello, and Jonathan Yates, piano. Nicky's birth could not have come at a better time, for this piece became a celebration of my nephew's new life.
