Piano Sonata, Op. 1 by Alban Berg Piano Solo - Sheet Music

By Alban Berg

Berg's pupil Adorno once said, “Whoever is seriously trying to comprehend Berg's music should closely apply themselves to the eleven-page piano sonata.” It is tempting to enlarge upon this statement: Whoever is trying to get to grips with New Music will not be able to avoid Berg's opus 1. It is one of the most frequently played sonatas amongst the Second Viennese School piano compositions. With this publication Henle is introducing Urtext editions to classical modernism. Once again, pianists will find flawless engraving, an absolutely reliable musical text and a commentary based on the sources. This edition is worldwide available.

    Berg's Opus One

This edition of the sonata is all that one can ask: it is laid out beautifully on the page, and thus ideal for study or performance.

Berg Piano Sonata Op. 1, Henle Edition

This piece is one of the pillars of twentieth century piano music. Several people urged me to try to learn it. At first, it made little musical sense to me, but at a certain point I got it and it has been a source of deep emotional experienceds ever since. Im more intermediate level than advanced, and struggled for a while, but I eventually came to appreciate Bergs highly pianistic writing style and things began to fall into place. Most importantly, I had been using a score downloaded from a free site, in which the typeface was rather small and it was difficult to tell exactly which notes made up some of the denser chords, even after enlarging the pages. Then I discovered this Henle edition and it was like a miracle every phrase became crystal clear.

    prefer the UE edition

After ordering both the UE and Henle editions I think I am qualified to say that this is good, but the UE edition is much clearer, better print and paper, and cheaper too!

    Excellent

    a welcome addition

I hesitate between this edition and the newer Universal Edition one. For one thing, on this one Sheetmusic allows us a peep inside to check that the score is done in the usual superb, clear style Henle has us accustomed to, the other we cannot tell. A wonderful piece of work once you get over the initial difficulties, technical and other. Give it a chance, it will not let you down!
