This brilliant work unites two different traditions: classical sonata form, and ragtime music. The music has both the ragtime "bounce" and more classical techniques of form and impact. For example, the first movement is in sonata-allegro form; the second movement is a waltz with ragtime elements; and the third movement is a rondo. Heard here is the composer at the piano, recorded in 1997 on the hundredth anniversary of the first published ragtime piece by Scott Joplin.
