The genesis of this work emerged in the wake of Kael's untimely departure. As I embarked on my master's program at the University of Birmingham with a plan to compose a symphonic work, I felt an undeniable urge to pay tribute to Kael in a way that transcended traditional conventions. Although a symphony initially occupied my thoughts, it somehow felt inadequate to encapsulate the essence of his memory. Kael's fondness for the piano echoed in my mind, guiding me towards the choice of a piano concerto. Drawing inspiration from Alban Berg's violin concerto, I recognized that this format held a profound and fitting resonance for the homage I envisioned.

I didn't want to just write a concerto and put his name on the dedication. I wanted the piece to be very special, so instead of the customary three movements, I chose to compose four, each with a title beginning with consecutive letters from Kael's name. These titles are not mere labels but convey adjectives imbued with musical interpretations: "Kind," "Adventurous," "Emotional," and "Lively."

Kael's affection for Pablo Neruda's "20 Poems and a Song of Despair" played a pivotal role in shaping this concerto. Each movement draws inspiration from a specific poem within the collection. The first movement, "Kind," finds its muse in poem 6 ("I remember you as you were last autumn…"). "Adventurous," the second movement, mirrors the essence of poem 9 ("Drunk with pines and long kisses…"). For the third movement, "Emotional," I found inspiration in poem 15 ("I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent…"). Lastly, "Lively," the fourth movement, dances with the spirit of poem 14 ("Every day you play with the light of the universe…"). It's essential to clarify that while these poems were written by Neruda for his lovers, they do not directly relate to Kael. Instead, I aim to channel the inspiration that moved Kael, creating music that mirrors his admiration rather than his personal narrative.

In crafting this concerto, I wish to emphasize that it does not dwell on a somber or mournful tone. Kael's vivacious spirit and love for life inspired a composition that is, at its core, a celebration. While moments of tenderness may arise, the overarching sentiment is one of joy and vitality. This concerto stands as a testament to the life Kael lived and the vibrancy he brought to everyone around him.
