This work is one of the most brilliant and technically demanding piano concertos in the Romantic repertoire.
Rachmaninov completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in 1909, having composed it especially for his first tour of the United States. Eight years before this, the successful première of his Second Piano Concerto had marked the end of a long period of depression. This success filled the composer with renewed self-confidence, and the years leading up to the composition of the Third Piano Concerto were productive and happy.
During this period, he had marrried, had two daughters and begun a successful career as conductor. By 1906, however, Rachmaninov had become worried by the tide of political unrest that was sweeping, Russia, and he began to spend more and more time overseas.
In 1909, he made his first tour of America as a concert pianist giving the première of the Third Piano Concerto in New York on 20 November. He practised the brilliant and fiendishly difficult piano part on a silent keyboard aboard ship during the Atlantic crossing.
Here are two of this concerto's movements. Though the second movement (Adagio) comes first in this arrangement, and is followed by the Allegro ma non troppo, which is the first movement.
