He was less interested in the practising of playing techniques, but rather in introducing the player to a contemporary tonal language. His compositional style includes traditional forms, concise themes, a tonally expandable framework, and a lively modern rhythm with dance-like elements. The Piano Book is a modern counterpart of Schumann's example. The little settings are characterized by delightful motivic and melodious ideas with different characters.
