Wonderful piece
The interest of this piece isn't its difficulty. It is a wonderful piece: expressive, complex, rewarding. It is deeply attached to romanticism and especially Schumann and Chopin, but it isn't romantic like Rochberg or other New Romantics: it's definitely high modernist. In terms of difficulty: it is unapproachable, for most humans. However there are many isolated passages that are very rewarding. The score is integral because it is hand-drawn, very professionally but not mechanically. The care in the composition is revealed in a number of new kinds of arrangements of ties and staves. (Five staves at once, in one passage.)
