The piece opens with a combo treatment of the conversational call and response followed by a harmonization presented by the entire band. The bridge draws from two aspects of Miles's musical personality — the spare, blues-inflected lyricism of his solo voice on the recording, and the static harmonic fields he had previously embraced in the Kind of Blue era. The shout chorus draws its language from other voices in the broader Miles Davis universe. Nods to the solos of Hank Mobley and Wynton Kelly are arranged above harmonies influenced by former band mates Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
