There are several references to Mozart having composed five trios for basset-horns. No autographs exist. The original Breitkopf version of Divertimento No. 2, upon which this edition is based, consisted of two basset-horn parts for the upper voice, and a bass clef basset-horn part for the third voice. It lacks the 1st movement of later published editions, has the same next three movements, and then finishes with a completely different closing movement. Alternate parts are provided in this version allowing many ensembles of clarinets, basset-horns, bass clarinet and bassoon.
