Petite Suite Lac Winnipeg was composed in January of 2017 and dedicated to the French guitarist Olivier Chassain. It was premiered in April of 2018 by Mr. Chassain at a Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society concert in Winnipeg.
In L’oiseau sur un rocher, the composer is inspired by the observation of a cormorant on a hot summer’s day.This beautiful bird is cleaning itself on a rock along the gigantic Lake Winnipeg. The music attempts to imitate this process as it unfolds. The music through its fluctuating tempos, metric changes and quick trills help to visualize the cormorant’s every move. The 6th string of the guitar is tuned up to F and, along with the open B, brings out the modal quality of the music. Quartal and quintal harmonies reestablish the main theme of the piece. A tremolo section follows and evokes a sense of nostalgia and even urgency vis-à-vis man’s responsibility towards the environment. The piece ends with the introduction of a new theme which announces the next movement.
L’envol, the second movement of the Suite, attempts to depict the take off, flight and landing of the cormorant. The piece starts with the introduction of the same theme alluded to in the last movement but at a brisk tempo. A declamato pesante section follows personifying the take off of our bird. The piece evolves with a fast arpeggiated section reminiscent of Leo Brouwer’s music. The main theme returns transposed and a new declamato section reappears as the landing of the bird is depicted rhythmically. The Lento section with its harmonics and cantabile melody ends in calm and serenity, bringing the story to a natural close.

Cette suite fut composée en janvier 2017 pour le guitariste français Olivier Chassain, commémorant sa visite au Manitoba lors de sa tournée avec le GFA 30 ans plus tôt. Le morceau connu sa première en avril 2018 et a été joué pour la première fois par M. Chassain lors d’un concert organisé par la Société de guitare de Winnipeg.
Le compositeur s’inspire de l’observation d’un cormoran aperçu sur un rocher le long du grand lac Winnipeg une journée chaude d’été. Le premier mouvement, L’oiseau sur un rocher, tente de décrire l’oiseau qui se lave au grand soleil le long du lac Winnipeg. Cette musique, à travers sa polymétrie, ses rythmes vifs et ses trilles nous aide à visualiser chacun des mouvements de l’oiseau. La sixième corde est accordée en fa qui, lorsque pinçée en même temps qu’un si accentue le caractère modal du morceau. Des accords de quintes et de quartes font resortir la mélodie principale du morceau. Une section de tremolo de caractère mélancolique ajoute un sentiment de nostalgie et même de tristesse vis à vis notre négligeance de l’environnement. Le morceau se termine avec l’introduction d’un nouveau thème qui annonce déjà la suite du prochain mouvement.
L’envol, le deuxième mouvement, tente de décrire le décollage et le mouvement progressif de l’envol de l’oiseau. Le thème qui est introduit au début figurait déjà à la fin du premier mouvement, annonçant une musique plus dynamique et animée. La section declamato pesante débute avec de simples croches et progressivement devient plus animée et complexe rhythmiquement, personifiant le décollage. Le musique se poursuit avec une série d’arpèges répétés qui ajoutent de la tension et rappellent certains morceaux de Brouwer. Le thème principal réapparait transposé et la section declamato pesante est reprise mais cette fois inversée, allant du rythme plus complexe au moins complexe, et imitant le ralentissement de l’oiseau et l’atterrissage. Le tout se termine dans le calme avec le murmure du thème principal articulé en harmoniques.
