This vibrant arrangement of Personent Hodie brings fresh energy to the beloved holiday standard, driving forward with rhythmic momentum to a powerful fortissimo unison declaration at the conclusion. Perfect for tenor/bass choirs, from middle school to adult ensembles, the piece is both accessible and rewarding, offering valuable opportunities to teach and refine choral intonation skills. Its dynamic character and strong finish make it a standout addition to any holiday program.
Personent Hodie was originally published in 1582 in Piae Cantiones, a Finnish song book. It likely originated in cathedral song schools in Finland and Sweden. Other melodies from as far back as 1360 are similar to the melody. The setting was shared with a British Minister in Sweden who gave it to other officials in England, and thus, the journey of this favorite tune began. There are several translations of this Latin text, and this arrangement uses the translation by Jane M. Joseph (1894-1929). The melody is initially passed around among sections, depending on each group's comfortable range. Harmonies are created as open sonorities, with modification toward unisons in cadences. Memorable countermelodies create harmonies, and the use of syncopated entrances and rhythmic rests and consonants (Ex. meas. 39-42; meas. 62-65) create energy as the choir propels the arrangement forward. Whenever possible, the melody has been doubled at the octave, with very accessible harmony for male voices with note repetition. Although unisons and open harmonies are primarily utilized, measure 62 shows the use of thirds in the melody, which continues in subsequent measures. The arrangement moves along with energy to the final fortissimo presentation of the last phrase, a unison declaration of strength. This piece is accessible for tenor/bass choirs middle school through adult choirs, and provides many opportunities to teach and/or hone choral intonation skills.
