Perceptuality is one of 4 pieces commissioned by Hilliard Weaver Middle School bands for the 30th Anniversary of their building. This piece explores the many ideas of opposites and their relation in music. Light and dark. Happy and sad. Fast and slow. Major and minor. Usually there is a direct correlation in music, with sad music being in minor, happy music being fast, and so on. However, this piece is all about how if you change your perception of the world just a little bit, the same music may be perceived differently. Maybe that sad song wasn’t so sad after all.
