I. Literal translation:
Gram = Writing (composition),
Penta = Five (performers).

The number of basic ideas in the construction of the work is also 5:
1) major and minor seconds as
building blocks
2) free expressive choice of intervals
3) punctual insertion of large intervals by way of accompaniment
4) wider virtuosic linear intervals
(tritone sequences)
5) Sicilienne as rhythmic pulse

II. The graphic representation:
the 5-pointed star can be drawn with a single line. Pentagram is conceived with great clarity in the horizontal (linear) and the vertical (harmonic).
The star is sometimes inclined at an oblique angle:

III. The 5-pointed star also signfies the pentacle, a magical symbol supposed to ward off evil spirits.
The opening, with its slow progression of rasping seconds and the
conclusion, with its sequence of descending notes on the tuba,
ending in one held note, convey the mysterious nature of the symbol.
The agitated central section is in the form of a ritual dance.

Pentagram will help to enrich the contemporary virtuoso literature for brass quintet.
